Courtyard garden with curved paths and planting beds

A courtyard garden behind period homes laid out with curved paths, steel edging, fresh soil for new planting beds and a wooden deck.

Behind a row of period homes, this courtyard garden was given a completely new layout: flowing paths, clearly edged planting beds and a wooden deck, so the garden is easy to walk through and ready for new planting.

What we did

  • Designed a layout with curved paths that connect the homes, the deck and the gate
  • Installed steel edging to give the paths and beds a clean, lasting line
  • Prepared the paths on a well-draining sand base
  • Filled the beds with fresh soil, ready for new shrubs and borders
  • Kept the existing trees and hedges as the green structure of the garden

Why steel edging

Steel edging follows curves easily and stays in place for years. It keeps soil out of the paths and gravel or sand out of the beds, so the garden keeps its shape with little maintenance.

A garden that fits the houses

The soft curves contrast nicely with the straight brick facades and give a small city garden a sense of space. Existing trees provide shade and privacy from the start, while the new beds can be planted in phases.
