Plastering in The Hague

Smooth walls and ceilings make a room. We plaster new and old walls, repair cracks and damaged plasterwork, and deliver a finish that is ready for paint or wallpaper.

Freshly plastered attic wall and sloping ceiling with rooflight

Plastering turns rough walls, new partitions and old ceilings into a calm, even surface. It is skilled work, and the difference between average and good plastering shows as soon as the light falls across a wall.

What we do

  • Walls: plastering brick, concrete and plasterboard walls, from a single wall to a complete house.
  • Ceilings: smooth plaster ceilings or spray plaster, on concrete, plasterboard or old ceilings.
  • Repairs: filling cracks, repairing damage after new wiring or pipes, and patching old plaster.
  • Corners and edges: straight corners with corner beads, and neat finishing around frames and sockets.
  • Attics and roof extensions: plastering sloping ceilings and new walls after insulation, as in our plastering project.

Old ceilings in pre-war homes

Many homes built before the war, for example in Duinoord, the Zeeheldenkwartier and Bezuidenhout, have reed or lath ceilings with decorative cornices. These ceilings are part of the character of the house. Where possible we repair them; where they are too damaged, we can make a new ceiling and restore or recreate the cornices.

Plastering during a renovation

Plastering comes after the rough work: new walls, electrics, pipes and insulation must be finished first, otherwise the walls have to be opened up again. During a full renovation we plan it at the right moment. After the plaster has dried, the painter can start.

Preparation and finish

We protect floors and frames, prepare the surface with the right primer and choose the plaster type for the wall and the room. Bathrooms and kitchens need moisture-resistant materials. When we are done, the walls are ready for the finish you chose.

Reduced VAT

For homes older than two years, the labour costs of plastering currently fall under the reduced VAT rate. We list labour and materials separately in the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between ready for wallpaper and ready for paint?

Ready for paint (sausklaar) is smoother and more even than ready for wallpaper (behangklaar), because paint shows every irregularity. Tell us how you want to finish the walls and we plaster accordingly.

My old ceiling has cracks. Does it need to be replaced?

Not always. Cracks in old ceilings can often be repaired, or the ceiling can be covered with plasterboard. If a ceiling is sagging or loose, it needs to be fixed or replaced for safety.

How long before I can paint new plaster?

That depends on the thickness of the plaster, the temperature and ventilation. Usually a few days to a couple of weeks. Painting too early can cause stains and peeling.

Is plastering messy?

Plastering itself is wet work rather than dusty work. We cover floors, frames and furniture, and clean up at the end of the job.
