A garden is an extra room, especially in a city where outdoor space is precious. Whether you have a small courtyard behind a townhouse in the Zeeheldenkwartier or a large garden around a villa in Wassenaar, a good layout makes all the difference.
What we do
- Garden design: a layout based on how you use the garden: dining, playing, relaxing or gardening.
- Terraces and paths: natural stone, ceramic tiles, concrete pavers or wood, laid on a solid, well-draining base.
- Fencing and screening: wooden fences, brick walls, green screens and gates.
- Raised beds and planting: borders, hedges, trees and low-maintenance planting.
- Drainage: levelling, drains and soakaways so water does not stay on the terrace or run towards the house.
- Garden buildings: sheds, studios and garden offices, see extensions and garden buildings.
- Garden lighting: path lights, wall lights and accent lighting, see lighting plans.
City gardens in The Hague
Many homes in The Hague have a narrow, deep garden behind a terraced house, often reachable only through the house. That requires careful planning: protecting floors and walls, bringing materials in small batches and removing soil and rubble the same way. In apartment buildings, the garden of a ground-floor apartment may be subject to VvE rules.
Green and climate-proof
Heavy rain is becoming more frequent. A garden with a balanced mix of paving and planting absorbs water better, stays cooler in summer and attracts birds and insects. Rainwater from the roof can be led to a rain barrel or soakaway instead of the sewer. Ask us about combining your garden with sustainable upgrades for your home.
After an extension or renovation
The best moment to landscape a garden is right after an extension or a large renovation, when the heavy work is done. We can plan it as the final phase of the same project, so the terrace connects neatly to the new garden doors and nothing has to be redone.
Permits
Fences, sheds and terraces at the back of the house are often permit-free within certain limits. Near the street, in a protected cityscape, or when trees need to be felled, a permit can be required. Read do you need a permit for an extension in The Hague? for how to check your address.
Frequently asked questions
What does garden landscaping cost?
Garden projects start from around €7,500. The final price depends on the size of the garden, the paving and terrace materials, the amount of planting and extras such as lighting, fencing and drainage.
Can you design my garden as well as build it?
Yes. We start with your wishes and the way you want to use the garden, then work out a layout with terrace, paths, planting and lighting before anything is built.
My garden can only be reached through the house. Is that a problem?
No, this is very common in The Hague. We protect floors and walls, plan deliveries carefully and use small machinery or work by hand where needed.
Do I need a permit for a garden building or fence?
Small garden buildings and fences at the back are often permit-free within size and height limits. Near the street, in a protected cityscape or for larger structures a permit may be needed. Felling trees can also require a permit.
Can you lay the garden after my extension is finished?
Yes, and that is the best order. Once the extension is built, we level the ground, lay the terrace against the new glass doors and finish the garden.
