"What does a new bathroom cost?" is one of the first questions we get. As a rough indication, a bathroom renovation costs from around €5,000 to €25,000 or more, and a separate toilet starts from around €2,500. Where your project falls depends on a few clear factors.

Project Indicative cost
Toilet renovation From €2,500
Bathroom renovation €5,000 – €25,000+

The honest answer to the exact price: it depends. Every bathroom is different, which is why we always give an itemised quote after a site visit. But the main cost drivers are the same everywhere.

1. Size and scope

A larger bathroom needs more tiles, more labour and often more fittings. Equally important is the scope: are you replacing only the sanitary ware, or stripping everything back to the walls and floor?

2. Layout changes

Keeping the toilet, shower and basin in their current positions is the most efficient. Moving them means new drains, often with the right fall, and possibly changes to the floor. Moving a toilet in particular depends on the position of the soil pipe.

3. The state of the floor and walls

In older homes in The Hague, bathrooms are often on timber floors. If the joists are weak or rotten, they need to be repaired or reinforced before tiling. Uneven walls need to be levelled. This only becomes clear once the old tiles are off, which is why a good quote mentions how such findings are handled.

4. Plumbing and electrics

Old lead or galvanised pipes should be replaced while the walls are open. A new bathroom often needs new electrical groups, an extractor fan, sockets and lighting, and connections for underfloor heating or a towel radiator.

5. Waterproofing and the shower

A walk-in shower looks simple, but needs a precise fall in the floor, a linear or square drain and a reliable waterproof layer. This is not the place to save money.

6. Tiles

Tiles range from budget to very expensive. Large-format tiles look calm but need a very flat surface and more care to lay. Small tiles, patterns and mosaics take more time per square metre.

7. Fittings and sanitary ware

A wall-hung toilet with a concealed cistern, a thermostatic rain shower, a freestanding bath or a double vanity unit all add to the cost, but also to the comfort. Mid-range quality from well-known brands is often the best value: spare parts remain available for years.

8. Apartments and access

In an upstairs apartment without a lift, materials must be carried up and waste carried down. Work on shared drains and noise insulation may need approval from the VvE; read how VvE approval works.

How to keep control of the budget

  • Decide on the layout before asking for quotes.
  • Choose tiles and fittings early, so the quote can be precise.
  • Ask for an itemised quote with labour and materials separated.
  • Agree that extra work is only done after your written approval.

Frequently asked questions

Why do bathroom quotes differ so much?

Quotes often differ in what is included: strip-out, waste disposal, electrics, waterproofing, finishing and the materials. Compare the scope line by line, not just the total.

Is it cheaper if I buy my own tiles and fittings?

Sometimes, but check with your contractor first. Make sure the products are complete, suitable for the layout and delivered on time, otherwise the work stops.

Can I save money by keeping the layout?

Yes. Keeping the toilet, shower and drains in the same place avoids extra plumbing and floor work.
