Period home in The Hague during a renovation with scaffolding inside

Many people who work for international organisations or embassies in The Hague are away for long periods: a mission, a posting elsewhere, or simply a busy travel schedule. That does not have to stop a renovation. With good preparation you can follow and control the work from anywhere.

1. Agree everything in writing before you leave

The most important work happens before the first wall is opened:

  • A written, itemised quote that describes the scope per part.
  • A planning with a start date, the main phases and the expected handover.
  • Payment milestones linked to progress, not to dates.
  • An agreement that extra work is only done after your written approval, even if it is just an email.

2. One contact person and a fixed update moment

Agree who your contact person is and when you will hear from them, for example a short update with photos every week. Decisions that cannot wait are discussed by phone or video call. This rhythm prevents surprises on both sides.

3. Make your choices early

Tiles, sanitary ware, kitchen, floors and paint colours often cause delays when they are chosen during the work. Choose as much as possible before you leave, or agree on a clear process: the contractor sends two or three options with photos and prices, you choose within a set number of days.

4. Arrange the practical matters

  • Keys and access: who has keys, and who may enter the home?
  • Utilities: water, electricity and heating must stay connected during the work.
  • Insurance: inform your home insurer about the renovation and the period the home is empty.
  • Neighbours: a short note with the planning and a contact number prevents irritation.
  • VvE: in an apartment, approval for work on shared parts must be arranged first. Read VvE approval for renovations.
  • Permits: if a permit is needed, make sure the application is submitted in time. Read do you need a permit?.

5. Valuables and furniture

Remove or store valuables, documents and fragile furniture, or have them packed and moved to a room that is not part of the work. Dust gets everywhere during a renovation.

6. The handover

Ideally you are present for the handover, the oplevering. If that is not possible, ask for a video walkthrough and a written list of any snagging points with dates by which they will be fixed. A trusted friend or neighbour can check on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions

Can a renovation really be managed from abroad?

Yes, if the agreements are clear and there is one contact person. Most decisions can be taken by email or video call, supported by photos and drawings.

How do I pay a contractor while I am abroad?

Usually by bank transfer per agreed milestone, for example at the start, after a main phase and at handover. Only pay a milestone once you have seen that it has been reached, for example through photos.

Should I tell my home insurer about the renovation?

Yes. Inform your home insurer before the work starts, especially if the home will be empty or partly opened up. Some policies have conditions for empty homes or construction work.
